There’s something timeless about sharing traditional Moroccan mint tea. Served throughout Morocco as a symbol of hospitality, warmth, and connection, this refreshing green tea is deeply woven into everyday Moroccan culture. The combination of fresh mint, green tea, and sweetness creates a light yet comforting drink traditionally poured from height to create its signature frothy top.
Whether enjoyed after a meal or shared with guests, authentic Moroccan mint tea brings a sense of calm, ritual, and slow living into the home.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp Chinese gunpowder green tea
- 1 large handful fresh mint leaves
- 750ml boiling water
- 2–4 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
Method
Step 1 — Rinse the Tea
Add the green tea to a traditional Moroccan teapot or heatproof pot. Pour a small amount of boiling water over the tea leaves, swirl gently for a few seconds, then discard the water. This helps remove bitterness and prepares the tea for brewing.
Step 2 — Add Mint & Sugar
Add the fresh mint leaves and sugar directly into the teapot.
Traditional Moroccan mint tea is often served quite sweet, but you can adjust the sweetness to your preference.
Step 3 — Brew the Tea
Pour the remaining boiling water into the pot and allow the tea to steep gently for around 5 minutes.
The mint slowly infuses into the green tea, creating the refreshing aroma Moroccan mint tea is known for.
Step 4 — Mix & Serve
Traditionally, Moroccan mint tea is poured into a glass and back into the teapot several times to evenly distribute the flavours.
Pour the tea slowly from height into small glasses to create the signature foam on top.
Serve warm with pastries, desserts, or alongside traditional Moroccan meals.
